I’m Still Standing: An Interview with Kenner Moore

In 2017, Kenner found himself at the doors of Workshops Empowerment Inc. for court ordered community service. Though only here for a few months, there is no doubt that his time here left an everlasting mark. So much so that years later, he reached out inquiring about any open positions - willing to do what it took to come back on board, as a full-time employee, in 2021. It was no surprise to any of us when every task he was given, he excelled and quickly developed rapport with management and coworkers alike.

Kenner has faced many hills and traveled through many valleys. Yet, his smiled is never forced. He embraces life and all that comes with it with humility and strength. Kenner has experienced loss, tragic loss, that would leave most of us in its wake. The death of a child and multiple family members in the last decade. The most recent of which, only 2 months ago, when he witnessed the death of his sister. Faced with this, he welcomed his 17-year-old niece into his home and has helped her find employment and worked to help her navigate grief and the loss of her mother.

But, let’s back up a bit… in 2011 he lost his leg in a tragic accident. Airlifted by helicopter, and clinging to life, he woke up a week later, learning that they were not able to save his left leg. He wears a prosthetic leg today and spoke to the fact that he is working hard to save for a new prosthetic. Over the years, the knee portion has given out and it’s time for a full replacement: “I will get it. I will not give up.”, says Kenner.

Kenner was recently promoted to a Crew Leader. With that comes added responsibilities and the task of training others. He explains that his new title simply means helping others know what they are capable of. To watch him train coworkers on new tasks, he exudes kindness and is full of encouragement. He’s also been known to be called “The Jack of All Trades” because he is reliable and provides service with a smile.

Kenner told us a lot about what he does for others. When asked what he does for himself, he paused and grinned: “I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that. I do so much for other people, but when I can, I like to play my games — 2K NBA Basketball”.
